Making sense of Collision, Liability and all your Car Insurance Options
Liability: If you do damage to another person's car or body in an accident, we cover the loss under your Auto Liability protection. Basically, we're protecting the other guy from your at-fault damages to both their car and, let's say, their broken arm.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: Protecting you from folks on the road who hit you and they do not have insurance or don't have enough insurance. It protects you from the hit-n-run driver or let's say you're the 3rd car in a multi-car pile up on I-45, the insurance is exhausted before it gets to you. Bottom line: You're not at-fault, the other guy does not have insurance to cover your loss. It provides both bodily injury coverage for you and your passengers and covers the damage to your car. There is no deductible for the bodily injury portion but there is a State of Texas mandated $250 deductible for uninsured/underinsured property damage (damage to your own car).
Personal Injury Protection (PIP): PIP provides for medical coverage and loss of wages for you and passengers in your vehicle in an at-fault AND/OR non-fault accident.
Medical Payments: This is similar to PIP but it does not include the benefit of covering your lost wages. Tends to be less expensive than PIP but it is subject to subrogation and PIP is not.
Collision (part of the "full coverage" concept): Collision protects the CAR in the event of damage. Most use this in an at-fault situation due to damage from hitting another inanimate object (another car, fence, ditch, pole, etc). If you're chosen to reject Uninsured/Underinsured protection, your car can be repaired under Collision even it if the accident is not your fault. Benefit is subject to the deductible you've chosen.
Comprehensive (Other than Collision - also part of the "full coverage" concept): This covers damage to your vehicle from Theft, Fire, Flood, Vandalism, Hit an animal, acts of God. Living on the Gulf Coast, we still have lots of undeveloped land and deer still pose a danger to many. We've had many folks driving along Red Bluff find out that: Deer + Truck = New Truck.
Towing and Labor: If your car is disabled due to a covered loss, we reimburse towing up to the limit of protection you've chosen.
Rental Reimbursement: Provides a rental car when your car is disabled, damaged, or unrecovered due to a covered loss. Especially important for single car households, without this protection you may find yourself footing the bill for a rental car or, worse, just being on foot. Rental reimbursement is typically for a max of 30 days.
