Coverage AA/BB (Liability Bodily Injury and Property Damage)

Q: Does my liability apply when another person drives my car?
A: Yes, it covers damage to the car they hit (if at-fault) and collision would cover damage to your own car.

Q: Does my liability cover me when I rent a car?
A: Yes it covers liability when you rent. So if you're in a rental car and you've declined the rental car company's insurance - here's what you're in for: Let's say you hit me while driving the rental car. Your liability insurance covers the damage to my car, my broken arm AND the damage to the rental car. What is not covered by your insurance (and typically is charged by the rental car company) is the "loss of use" of that vehicle - meaning the rental dollars unearned for each day in repair shop.

Q: If I drive someone else's car, does my liability coverage cover their car and the damage I cause?
A: The car's liability protection would cover the person you struck and your liability coverage would cover the damage done to your friend's car. Same works in reverse if they are driving your car.

Q: Are my passengers covered if I am negligent?
A: Yes, under liability if you are at-fault and, if you have the coverage, under PIP or MedPay.

Q: How much coverage do I need with all the lawsuits?
A: Texas minimum limits for Auto Liability protection is currently 25/50/25. That means if you cause bodily injury in an accident there is $25,000 per person/$50,000 max for all parties hurt and there is $25,000 in property damage coverage to the object you struck. Texas Liability laws will change January 1, 2011 with the minimum limits increasing to 30/60/30. This is due to rising costs for medical losses and auto repair. You should review your limits of protection. Higher limits are affordable and give you a greater level of protection. What do you have to protect? How much will someone sue you for if you're at-fault? Minimum limits are good – but are they really good enough for your needs? Consider your options can include protection limits up to 250/500/250.
